Rabbi David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, awarded Rabbi Joshua Eli Plaut with the Doctor of Divinity at Graduation Ceremonies in New York on Thursday, May 5, 2011, at Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York. Rabbi Plaut was honored for 25 years of scholarly distinction as an alumnus of HUC-JIR.
Since 2004, Rabbi Joshua Eli Plaut currently serves as the Executive Director of American Friends of Rabin Medical Center in New York. Under his leadership, he has directed and expanded the USA headquarters for premier medical complex in Israel, the Rabin Medical Center and he has grown and engaged the New York based Board. He has increased annual fundraising, overseen the development of grants and facilitated foundation relationships, and overseen the management of the national organization.
Rabbi Plaut has served as Rabbi of Temple Sholom in Floral Park since 2009. From 1993 through 2001, he served as Rabbi of Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center in Vineyard Haven, MA.
Rabbi Plaut received his BA from Beloit College, WI; his MA from UCLA; and his Ph.D. from New York University in Hebrew and Judaic Studies with a concentration on Folklore and Mythology. He was ordained and received his MA in Hebrew Letters from HUC-JIR.
Rabbi Plaut has been a visiting scholar, taught at the university level, and published widely.
