Rabbi David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, will award Rabbi Devon A. Lerner with the Doctor of Divinity at Graduation Ceremonies in Cincinnati on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 7:30 pm at Isaac M. Wise Temple (8329 Ridge Road). Rabbi Lerner will be honored for 25 years of scholarly distinction as an alumna of HUC-JIR.
Since 1979, Rabbi Devon A. Lerner has served as a rabbi to interfaith couples and unaffiliated families as an interfaith teacher, counselor, and guide. She has welcomed interfaith couples and families into the Jewish community, educated them about the strengths and struggles of being an interfaith family, provide premarital and interfaith counseling, officiated at interfaith weddings, and helped couples personalize their ceremonies. Rabbi Lerner wrote Celebrating Interfaith Marriages, a guide for interfaith couples who wish to create a ceremony that honors both of their families and traditions.
Rabbi Lerner is a member of the HUC-JIR Alumni Association, the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR), the American Mental Health Counselors Association, and the Women’s Rabbinic Network (WRN).
Rabbi Lerner has served on the Board of Stonewall Communities, a community-based non-profit organization that advocates for and serves older lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgender (LGBT) people; and the Interfaith Center for Public Policy. She was a member of the Religious Coalition for the Freedom to Marry.
Rabbi Lerner was ordained at HUC-JIR in Cincinnati. She earned her MS in Social Work at Boston University, and her BS in Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin. She also received a certificate from a two-year Gestalt Therapy Training program.
