Message from Richard Siegel about the New Name for the SJNM

Dear students, faculty and administration of HUC-JIR,

As you may have heard, the HUC-JIR School of Jewish Communal Service is now the

HUC-JIR School of Jewish Nonprofit Management (SJNM)

A new name, but providing the same outstanding education in Jewish professional leadership.

For more than 40 years, we were the School of Jewish Communal Service, so why change the name now?  We certainly still believe in the “calling” to serve the Jewish people.  Indeed that is the quintessential quality we look for in our students, as the attached article makes clear (

As HUC media advisory notes:

  • The renamed SJNM manifests the new realities of American Jewish life, which has grown to encompass a broad array of organizations and enterprises, including social justice, community relations, Israel advocacy, culture, the arts, education, youth services, camping, and outreach, among others.
  • With this diversification and expansion, there has been a growing demand for professionals who have the business skills and in-service experience needed to lead these increasingly sophisticated nonprofit organizations.
  • The SJNM’s new name actually catches up with (our) own forward-looking curriculum developed over the past decade, where students integrate a solid grounding in Jewish studies, a deep understanding of North American and world Jewish communal dynamics, and leadership skills in fundraising, board relations, strategic planning, organizational development, communication and new media.

When you get a chance, take a look at our new website at  I think you will get a good sense of our vision and programs.  If you know a prospective candidate, tell them about our program or tell us about them.  And if you are a current rabbinical, cantorial, or education student who wants to gain a credential in Jewish nonprofit management while you are studying at HUC, please give me a call (213-765-2118) or send me an email (

We are proud to be part of the HUC-JIR community, and we look forward to continuing to contribute to our common mission of excellence in Jewish professional leadership.

All best…
