IJSO in the Community

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Dr. Joel Kushner, Director of the Institute for Judaism and Sexual Orientation of HUC-JIR participated in a panel discussion, “Jews in the GLBT Community,” on April 20, 2010.  The program, co-sponsored by California State University at Northridge (CSUN) Hillel, CSUN LGBTA, and CSUN Students for Israel, was attended by over 60 students following a screening of the movie, "Trembling Before G-d,” which shares the intimately told stories of Orthodox Jews who are gay or lesbian.  The film portrays a group of people who face a profound dilemma - how to reconcile their passionate love of Judaism with the Biblical prohibitions that forbid homosexuality.   The college students in attendance had numerous questions from wanting to know how other denominations addressed homosexuality to how they could advocate for LGBT equality on their own campus.

Rabbi Zach Shapiro (CN ’97) of Temple Akiba in Culver City, CA, and Member of the LA Campus’ Board of Overseers also participated on the panel.
