HUC-JIR Presents Founders' Medallion to Bryan Beyer, Ph.D.

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

Rabbi David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, awarded Dr. Bryan Beyer with the Founders’ Medallion at Graduation Ceremonies in Cincinnati on Sunday, June 6, 2010 at Isaac M. Wise Temple (8329 Ridge Road, Cincinnati).  Dr. Beyer was honored for his 25 years of scholarly distinction as an alumnus of HUC-JIR.

Dr. Beyer is the Professor of Old Testament at Columbia International University in Columbia, SC.  He received his B.A. in Humanities from Colorado State University in 1976, the Master of Divinity with a Biblical Studies emphasis from Denver Seminary in 1980, and the Doctor of Divinity from HUC-JIR in 1985.

Dr. Beyer has served at Columbia International University since 1985.  From 1985 to 1993, he was part of the Bible Faculty.  From 1993 to 1994, he was the Assistant Dean of the College and in 1991, he became the Dean of the College.  Dr. Beyer stated, “The seven years I served as academic dean were challenging but rewarding.  The college’s enrollment grew from the mid-400’s to the mid-600’s, and many faculty hired during that time are still at CIU making a significant contribution today.”  He served as Dean of the College until 2001, when he became the Dean of Students.  He held this position for three years, until he became the Professor of Old Testament, the position he currently holds.

Dr. Beyer explains that he has gained much personal satisfaction from writing and publishing due largely to the encouragement of his HUC-JIR faculty.  The Bible survey text he co-authored with Dr. Bill Arnold is now in its second edition and is among the leaders on Christian college campuses.

Dr. Beyer is very active in both volunteer and professional organizations.  He has been a member of the Evangelical Theological Society for over 25 years and the Old Testament Book Review Editor for their Journal since 2003.  He has been a member of the Society of Biblical Literature for over 25 years.  He has served on the Board of Directors of the Jerusalem University College in Israel since 1994, and the Chairman of the Associated Schools since 1997.  Additionally, he has taught adult Sunday School classes at St. Andrews Baptist Church in Columbia, SC, for 23 years.

Dr. Beyer said, “I greatly value the years I spent at HUC-JIR and appreciate so much the contribution HUC-JIR made into my life, preparing me to be a better teacher and scholar.”
