HUC-JIR Presents Doctor of Music, honoris causa, to Lilia Kazansky

Rabbi David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, awarded Cantor Lilia Kazansky with the Doctor of Music at Graduation Ceremonies in New York on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York.  Cantor Kazansky was honored for 25 years of scholarly distinction as an alumna of HUC-JIR.

Cantor Kazansky was appointed as a cantor of Beth David congregation in 1984, soon after graduating with a cantorial degree from HUC-JIR.  In 1978, she immigrated from the former Soviet Union with her husband, Boris, and her daughter, Miriam.

In the former Soviet Union, Cantor Kazansky received a Master’s degree as a singer and concert pianist, graduating cum laude from the Moscow State Conservatory.  Cantor Kazansky, together with her husband Boris, have performed classical repertoire as well as folk and sacred music in different cities of the US, Europe, and Russia.

Her youngest daughter, Rebecca, graduated as a Studio Art major from Vassar College and is now living in New York.  Miriam is a practicing psychologist in New Jersey.  Cantor Kazansky and Boris are enjoying being the grandparents of Jordan and Noah.

In April of 2009, Cantor Kazansky celebrated her 25 years with her congregation Beth David of Gladwyne, PA.
