Rabbi David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, awarded Rabbi Misha Zinkow with the Doctor of Divinity at Graduation Ceremonies in New York on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York. Rabbi Zinkow was honored for 25 years of scholarly distinction as an alumnus of HUC-JIR.
Rabbi Zinkow has been Senior Rabbi AT Temple Israel in Columbus, Ohio since July, 2004. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Occidental College in 1978, a Master’s degree in Hebrew Letters from HUC-JIR/LA, and rabbinic ordination from HUC-JIR/NY in 1985.
Rabbi Zinkow served as a URJ Camp Director at Swig from 1984-1992. From 1992 to 2000, he was a pulpit rabbi at Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco, CA and at Mt. Zion Hebrew Congregation in St. Paul, MN (as co-senior rabbi with his wife, Rabbi Elka Abrahamson). From 2001 to 2004, he served as a Hillel rabbi at The Ohio State University. During his rabbinate, his expertises have been in the areas of worship renewal, lifelong learning, social justice, and synagogue transformation.
Rabbi Zinkow serves on the Adjunct Faculty of HUC-JIR in the Mayerson Mentoring program. He is on the Lippman-Kanfer Institute for Re-invisioning Jewish Education for the 21st Century. He is in the current cohort of rabbis in the Rabbinic Leadership Program of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality.
Rabbi Zinkow and Rabbi Abrahamson have four children ages 17 to 24.
