Rabbi David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, awarded Rabbi Linda Henry Goodman with the Doctor of Divinity at Graduation Ceremonies in New York on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York. Rabbi Goodman was honored for 25 years of scholarly distinction as an alumna of HUC-JIR.
Rabbi Goodman has served as Rabbi of Union Temple of Brooklyn since 1992, where she has promoted intellectual and musical creativity, and a steadfast commitment to social justice. An outspoken advocate for the protection of women’s health, she focuses particularly on Reproductive Choice, the Healthy Teens Act, Emergency Contraception accessibility and clinic access and protection. She also is a determined advocate for LGBT rights and protections, and Marriage Equality for same sex couples. She serves on the Clergy Advisory Boards for the New York State Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, Concerned Clergy for Choice, and Reform Jewish Voice of New York State.
In 2012 Rabbi Goodman will become the first woman president in the 120-year history of the New York Board of Rabbis. She has served on the Board of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, and on the CCAR’s Committee on Jewish Sexual Values. She is the New York Regional Representative of the Women’s Rabbinic Network, a member of the Rabbinic Council of ARZA, and a member and supporter of Women of the Wall.
Rabbi Goodman graduated The Mannes College of Music and taught on its faculty. She also holds an MA from Queens College, and served on the faculty of SUNY College at Purchase. She earned an MAHL and D.Min. from Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion. She also has served on the faculties of New York Theological Seminary and Molloy College.
Rabbi Goodman is married to Rabbi Stephen Wise Goodman. The couple’s son Philip is a student at Binghamton University.
