Rabbi David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, awarded Rabbi Barbara Sobel Goldman-Wartell with the Doctor of Divinity at Graduation Ceremonies in New York on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York. Rabbi Goldman-Wartell was honored for 25 years of scholarly distinction as an alumna of HUC-JIR.
Rabbi Goldman-Wartell is currently the Interim Rabbi of Temple Concord in Binghamton, New York. Prior to her current position, she was the Director of Community Services for the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley, Jewish Educator at the Jewish Community Center of Allentown, and the rabbi of Congregation B’nai Harim in Pocono Pines, PA.
Rabbi Goldman-Wartell serves on the Board for the Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding at Muhlenberg College and continues to build coalitions and foster understanding and joint endeavors. She developed the Jewish Family Education programs at the JCC and two congregations to support family units and offer interactive, enriching Jewish family programs. She also developed family programs at the JCC and the Jewish Parenting Place. Her work at the Jewish Federation included working with the Community Relations Council, community commemorations, and overseeing the Holocaust Resource Center.
Rabbi Goldman-Wartell attended the University of Illinois and University of Maryland, where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work. She also holds a master’s degree in modern Jewish history from Baltimore Hebrew College. She was ordained as a rabbi from HUC-JIR and she is a certified hospital chaplain, having completed a residency at Lutheran General Hospital, and she is completing her training with the Interim Ministry Network.
She has lived in the Lehigh Valley for 21 years and currently resides in Orefield with her husband, Cantor Kevin Wartell.
