Dr. James E. Bowley Inducted onto HUC-JIR Board of Governors

Dr. James E. Bowley was inducted onto HUC-JIR Board of Governors on Monday, March 22 at HUC-JIR/Los Angeles. 

Rabbi David Ellenson, HUC-JIR President, stated, "James Bowley is a distinguished alumnus of our School of Graduate Studies who reflects the unique strength of our Graduate Studies program, which from its inception has welcomed students of all faiths.  We look forward to Dr. Bowley's perspective and guidance as we advance our institution's mission as an international center for advanced Jewish studies."

Dr. Bowley received his Doctor of Philosophy in Hebraic and Cognate Studies and his Master of Philosophy in Hebraic and Cognate Studies from HUC-JIR/Cincinnati in 1992 and 1990, respectively. 

Dr. Bowley is the Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS.  He teaches courses in biblical studies, Abrahamic traditions, and religion and literature.  His special research interests includeDead Sea Scrolls; Jewish-Christian Studies; History of Biblical Interpretation; Ethnic, Religious, and Intellectual Interaction in the Greco-Roman World; History of Biblical Interpretation; and The Bible and Modern Culture.  From 2005 to 2008, he served as the Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at Millsaps College. 

Dr. Bowley has served on various Boards, providing leadership and sharing his administrative experience.  From 2005 to 2009, he was the President of HUC-JIR’s School of Graduate Studies Alumni Society.  From 2006 to 2009, he was the Chair of the Society of Biblical Literature Program Unity, Rethinking the Concept and Categories of “Bible” in Antiquity Consultation.  Since 2006, Dr. Bowley has served as the Founder and Co-Chair of the Annual Lecture Series in Indian Culture at Millsaps College’s Hot Topics Community Enrichment Series.

Dr. Bowley has been awarded many grants, awards, and honors in his field.  Most recently, he received the 2009 Dead Sea Scrolls Foundation Research Grant.  Dr. Bowley has received this grant every year since 2004.  Bowley is widely published and has presented at scholarly presentations, educational presentations, and seminars.
