Dr. Alfred Gottschalk, z”l, Chancellor Emeritus, who served as President (1971-1996) and Chancellor (1996-2000) of HUC-JIR, was remembered at a Shloshim Memorial Service. The event, which took place at HUC-JIR/Los Angeles, was attended by 150 distinguished academic, communal, and religious leaders, members of HUC-JIR’s Boards of Governors and Overseers, Dr. Gottschalk’s children Marc Gottschalk and Rachel Gottschalk Brenner, and family members.
The Memorial features personal tributes to Dr. Gottschalk, readings from his writings, and music that had been composed for his 1971 Inauguration as President: Dr. Steven B. Sample, President, University of Southern California, and Stanley P. Gold, Former Chairman, HUC-JIR Board of Governors and Former Chairman of the Board USC, spoke about the partnership Dr. Gottschalk forged between HUC-JIR and USC. Rabbi Laura Geller, Senior Rabbi, Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills, presented his writing on the ordination of women; personal reflections on Dr. Gottschalk’s leadership and his role in the growth of the Los Angeles campus were offered by Rabbi William Cutter and Professor Gerald Bubis, respectively. Dr. Lewis Barth presented Dr. Gottschalk’s writing on the importance of Hebrew literature. Dr. Michael Berenbaum read his writing on Holocaust memory and conscience; Rabbi Emanuel Rose read Dr. Gottschalk’s prayer at President Ronald Reagan’s Second Inaugural; Marc Gottschalk and Rachel Gottschalk Brenner spoke on behalf of the family; and Cantors Arlene Bernstein and Mark Saltzman and rabbinical student Ethan Bair presented a musical selection from his Dr. Gottschalk’s Inaugural Service, composed by Cantor William Sharlin.
A Memorial Service in New York is planned for Sunday, December 13, 2009.
