The safety and wellbeing of our students, faculty, and staff are extremely important to us. Our senior management team is assessing the situation daily as it affects the HUC-JIR community by monitoring guidelines and recommendations from local, state, and federal health officials.  We will continue to update the community as this evolving situation develops.

Plans for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021:

Given the current state of the COVID-19 outbreak and projections for the coming months, all HUC-JIR stateside classes will be taught remotely for the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semester. Residency requirements will be suspended during this period and optional on-campus activities will be offered as conditions permit. Because of the power of building community in person, we are committed to finding opportunities to bring our campus communities together as public health allows. 

Campus Reopening Plans:

  • Cincinnati: The Cincinnati campus is open on a limited and voluntary basis. All protocols are subject to change based on a wide variety of reasons, including but not limited to, local, state, and national health guidance, HUC national directives, or campus needs. Instruction will continue online this semester, but some study, research, and work will be returning to campus. Faculty, staff, and students must be screened and logged in to use the campus, without exception. Upon entry, you will be asked to complete the HUC Covid-19 Symptom Checklist. Your temperature will be taken using a non-contact thermometer. This must be done every time you enter the campus, but only once during a day as long as you follow the proper procedure. When you enter any building we will write your name into a daily log book. Please check your email from Rabbi Jonathan Hecht, Ph.D. for additional information, and contact him at jhecht@huc.edu with any questions.

  • Jerusalem: The Taube Family Campus in Jerusalem is open in compliance with the Israeli authorities' 'Purple Tag' requirements for the opening of businesses and NGOs. The majority of our classes are taught online, few on-campus lessons are given in small groups arrangements. The campus hours are Sunday to Thursday as follows:
    Lobby: 9:00 am – 9:00 pm
    Parking lot: 7:00am – 7:00 pm
    Library: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

  • Los Angeles: The Skirball Campus in Los Angeles remains closed. If you require campus access, please contact Joshua Holo, Ph.D., at jholo@huc.edu.

  • New York: The New York campus is open on a limited and voluntary basis. The New York administration will continue to monitor public health conditions and may add to these protocols up to and including closing the entire campus based on current local conditions. Coming to campus is voluntary and instruction will continue to be online. Faculty, staff, and students must request a time to enter the building by completing this form. Social distancing must be maintained and face masks must be worn in all public areas (except when working alone in single offices.) Everyone entering the building MUST complete the HUC Covid-19 Symptom Checklist. Your temperature will be taken at the security desk using a hands-free thermometer. STAFF:
Working from Home and Revised Emergency Leave Policy

HUC-JIR continues to take precautions and actions to ensure the well-being of our faculty, staff and students following the protocols from health experts, the CDC and federal and state agencies. To that end, we are issuing a revised Emergency Leave Policy to reflect recent developments, as well as the recently enacted Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) Federal legislation, to ensure you have the support you need. This revised policy supersedes and replaces the Emergency Leave Policy issued on March 12, 2020 in its entirety effective April 1, 2020.  This policy applies to leave taken between April 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020, in accordance with the FFCRA.  We recognize that the provisions of the FFCRA are complex and we encourage you to speak with your supervisor if you have questions. Please see these links to the Department of Labor’s FFCRA notice and a FAQ.
