As alumni of HUC-JIR, we have been given a lifelong gift. Regardless of our program of study, HUC-JIR provided us the tools by which we are able to do the sacred work that has been our calling.  We feel grateful for that gift and give back, not only through our donations to the Annual Campaign, but through the time that we spend working on the Alumni Leadership Council.

The Alumni Leadership Council is comprised of the leaders of Alumni Associations from HUC-JIR’s various schools. The Council is led by an Executive Team (Chair, Vice Chair, Member-At-Large, and Immediate Past Chair) of alumni from different schools of graduation.  Working in a collaborative relationship with HUC-JIR’s administration and Board of Governors, we serve as a voice for HUC-JIR’s alumni, a link between HUC-JIR and our alumni community in their role as ambassadors of the College-Institute, and a support to the work of the Alumni Associations.

On May 5, 2018, our reality shifted as we learned of Rabbi Aaron Panken’s tragic passing. In the hours, days, and weeks that followed, we worked with HUC-JIR administration to connect with our alumni, share information, and support each other as a community. We continue to work with them as the College-Institute begins the search process.  Rabbi Alan Litwak serves as one of four alumni on the President Search Committee.

The Alumni Leadership Council gathers monthly online and once a year in person.  This past year, we assisted HUC-JIR’s Senior Administrative Team in preparing the next strategic plan, guided the planning of AlumniLearn opportunities, supported the work of the National Office of Recruitment and Admissions by mentoring prospective students, coordinated a Vlog B’Omer social media day, and worked individually and collectively with the programs and projects of the Alumni Associations.

We invite you to be a part of these efforts - join our working groups or reach out to any of us with questions about how you can be involved.  Together we can continue to shape the future of leadership in the Jewish community and beyond.

Rachel Margolis, RJE, MAJE, MAJCS '07, Vice Chair
