We are honored to invite you to our annual Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion Soup Kitchen Soiree. This year marks a new chapter in the story of the HUC-JIR Soup Kitchen.
The Soup Kitchen was created in 1988 to provide a welcoming place in the West Village where those in need could enjoy a warm meal. Honoring the Jewish tradition of hachnasat orchim, welcoming in guests, we try to create an intimate and comforting atmosphere by serving our guests at their tables, engaging them in conversation, and providing a place of dignity to dine and get the support they deserve and need.
Over the past nineteen years, the Soup Kitchen has also been a place of learning for thousands of Jewish young people in the New York region and across the United States. These youth groups, religious school classes, and adult volunteers truly engage in the words of our Torah by putting the principles of tzedakah and tikkun olam into practice.
The HUC-JIR Soup Kitchen continues to offer a number of other services to our guests: we distribute quality second-hand clothing, students and volunteers mend clothing, and NYU law students offer free legal counsel. Despite these year-round efforts, hunger and homelessness continue to be pressing issues in the New York community. By donating to the HUC-JIR Soup Kitchen, you will be actively helping to alleviate these problems.
Please take the following into mind as you fill out your response card: it costs a minimum of three dollars per guest each Monday to provide a hot sit-down meal. A $36 contribution feeds an entire table of guests. A $250 donation ensures that all of our guests eat in comfort for one Monday. Contributions also help us purchase needed kitchen equipment, and assure that every guest has at the very least warm socks and a hat for the cold winter, among many other things.
This year, in hopes of increasing our efficacy in the community we have employed an intern. This intern will help the Soup Kitchen become even more effective and help secure the future of Soup Kitchen for as long as there is a need. Your donations help make all that the Soup Kitchen does possible.
"One should not think that one's actions do not affect others.
Everything one does in some way affects everyone else in the world."
–Rabbi Yerucham of Mir
