A delegation from the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles' Real Estate and Construction Division attended the HUC-JIR/Los Angeles Board of Overseers Retreat on September 17, 2007, where they were acknowledged for their generous grant of $50,000 to refurbish the classroom wing of the campus. HUC-JIR/Los Angeles was one of five grantees awarded to receive a grant from the REC Division's Real Estate Principals Organization, which was intended to "make a difference" in Jewish institutional physical facilities. Rabbi David Ellenson, President; Dr. Steven F. Windmueller, Dean of the Los Angeles campus, and Robert Kopple, HUC-JIR Governor and Chair of the Los Angeles Board of Overseers, expressed deep appreciation to the members of the delegation and described how pleased students and faculty were to return to campus in the new academic year and see the freshly painted and carpeted classrooms, halls, and student lounge.
Ken Kahan, Chair of the Real Estate Professionals Organization expressed delight in awarding this gift as they highly value the work of HUC-JIR in training quality Jewish leadership for the future. He noted that School of Jewish Communal Service (SJCS) interns have, over the years, contributed significantly to the Real Estate Division during their field placements, and acknowledged Jodi Berman, director of the Division who is an aluma of the SJCS.
"This gift to Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion by the Real Estate Division of the Federation makes a significant statement about the partnership of our Federation in working with educational and communal institutions" stated Dr. Steven F. Windmueller. "The grant has allowed us to make a significant difference in the quality of the learning environment for our students and has enhanced the public face of our classrooms, public areas and other facilities." Dean Windmueller also acknowledged Ken Ruby Construction for coordinating the refurbishment process.
