Israel at 60: Lecture at HUC-JIR/LA by Yaffa Weisman, May 14, 2008

The Frances-Henry Library at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles will be hosting a special meeting of the Association of Jewish Libraries of Southern California (AJLSC) in honor of Israel's 60th Independence Day Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. Professor Yaffa Weisman, Library Director, HUC-JIR/LA, will lecture on: Israel at 60 - Old Roots, New Culture, discussing the changing Israeli cultural landscape as reflected in contemporary Israeli literature, poetry and theatre.

The Frances-Henry Library at HUC-JIR/LA collects, preserves, and makes available a carefully selected variety of library materials in support of all the educational, professional and vocational programs of the school. The library also supports the academic partnership with the University of Southern California and its constituencies.

As a major Jewish informational resource, it serves the reference and research needs of the Greater Los Angeles community, other parts of the continental West Coast, and Hawaii.

AJLSC is affiliated with the Association of Jewish Libraries, an international professional organization. It is devoted to the promotion of Judaica librarianship and to the educational, informational, and networking needs of library personnel responsible for collections of Judaica.

The mission of AJLSC is to foster the growth and development of Jewish libraries by:
  • exchanging ideas on ways and means of solving specific library problems;
  • raising standards for Jewish libraries and librarians by encouraging and supporting education for Jewish librarianship.
In addition, AJLSC seeks to promote knowledge of Judaic literature and sources of information among the general public.
