SUZANNE AND JOHN GOLDEN are long-time supporters of HUC-JIR. John has served the Board of Governors for the past 16 years in a variety of capacities, including Vice Chair of the Board, member of the Executive Committee, Chair of the Nominating and Israel Committees, and Chair and member of numerous leadership Search Committees. They established the Golden Family Hanassi Fellows Program at HUC-JIR, which brings Israeli rabbinical students to intern in North American Reform congregations, and created an endowment fund to support recruitment of North American rabbinical and cantorial students. The Goldens are members of Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York and Adas Israel in Sag Harbor, NY, where John is co-chairing their current capital campaign. The Goldens also support WUPJ Nestor summer camps for young Reform Jews in the FSU. John is a past Chair of the Board of Colgate University and a retired partner of Goldman Sachs. He maintains his own private direct investment organization. Suzanne is a Board member and former Vice Chair of the Board of the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation which funds grants for basic research in mental health issues. Suzanne was the founder of Suzanne Golden Associates, a pioneer in law firm outplacement, and of Suzanne Golden Antiques. The Goldens are parents of two daughters who, with their husbands, have bestowed six wonderful grandchildren on Suzanne and John.
ANDREW REHFELD, PH.D., is the 13th President of HUC-JIR. A leading political scientist and distinguished Jewish communal leader, Dr. Andrew Rehfeld’s career has bridged both the academic and Jewish professional worlds as tenured Associate Professor of Political Science at Washington University (2001–2019) and as President and CEO of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis (2012–2019). The academic values of thinking, writing, and teaching are the core of his identity, coupled with a passionate commitment to building communities based on the Jewish values that are central to his life. He is an advocate for pluralism, inclusion, and racial and social justice, and an activist in combatting antisemitism, advancing peace and security for the state of Israel, and strengthening the ties binding Jews worldwide.
Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion is North America’s premier institution of Jewish higher education and the center for professional leadership development of Reform Judaism. A multi-campus academic and spiritual learning community in Cincinnati, Jerusalem, Los Angeles, and New York, HUC-JIR builds vibrant progressive Judaism in North America, Israel, and around the globe.
