Fiorello's Sister: Gemma La Guardia Gluck's Story
New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and his sister were the children of a mother of prestigious Italian Jewish lineage. In 1944, while he served as mayor of New York, Gemma and her Hungarian Jewish husband were living in Hungary, where they were arrested and deported to Mauthausen as political hostages. This exhibition, drawn from Gemma's memoir, presents photographs, letters, documents, and notes offering a rare and early first-hand English account of Ravensbrück concentration camp and the travails that survivors faced in the aftermath of the Holocaust. Presented in conjunction with the 125th anniversary of Mayor LaGuardia's birth.
