Dr. Weisberg will discuss her book-in-progress which explores the ways in which the early rabbis described family roles and relationships. She argues that while the Bible focuses on the extended family, clan or tribe, the rabbis saw the nuclear family - a married couple and their children - as the basic family unit around which religious and civil life was organized. At the same time, the rabbis recognized that family ties were created through both marriage and blood, and that every individual stood in the middle of a complex kinship web that dictated his rights and responsibilities to family members.
