Appointments

Chad Arnow has been appointed Director of Development Information Systems.


Rabbi Alan Bregman has been appointed the part-time Alumni Affairs Coordinator. Rabbi Bregman was the Regional Director of the Great Lakes Council of the UAHC and currently oversees HUC-JIR's Adult Jewish Learning and Living Department's programs.
Dr. Susan Einbinder has been granted tenure as Professor of Hebrew Literature. Ordained at the New York School in 1983, she received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in Comparative Literature in 1991. She has been teaching at the College-Institute as Associate Professor of Hebrew Literature.
Dr. Ruth M. Gais has been appointed Director of New York Kollel and Community Outreach. Ordained at the New York School in 2000, she has a Ph.D. from Princeton University in Classical Archaeology and a B.A. from Bryn Mawr College in Greek and Latin. She has served congregations in Orlando and St. Augustine, Florida, and leads the Shabbat morning minyan and Torah study at Temple Sinai in Summit, New Jersey.
Dr. Lisa Grant has been appointed Assistant Professor of Jewish Education. She received her Ph.D. in Jewish Education from the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) in May, where she served as the Coordinator for Recruitment and Special Projects and Instructor at the Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education, and previously as the Research and Evaluation Manager at the Melton Center for Research on Jewish Education. She received an M.B.A. in Public Management and worked for over ten years for a major health care organization.
Dr. Alyssa Gray has been appointed Instructor in Codes and Responsa Literature. She received her Ph.D. in Talmud and Rabbinics from JTS in December, where she wrote her dissertation on "A Talmud in Exile: The Influence of Jerusalem Talmud (PT) Avodah Zarah on the Formation of Babylonian Talmud (BT) Avodah Zarah." Previously, she practiced law as a litigator and worked as a consultant to a litigation firm.
Dr. Willis Johnson has been appointed Visiting Assistant Professor of Rabbinics. He received his Ph.D. in 1997 from the University of California at Berkeley. He has taught at the University of Chicago.
Batya Kaplan, M.L.S., has been appointed Librarian of the S. Zalman and Ayala Abramov Library in Jerusalem. Before coming to HUC-JIR, she was the Public Services Librarian at JTS and the Head of Public Services at YIVO. She holds a degree in Jewish and General History and Education from Hebrew University and a M.L.S. from Queens College.
Dr. David E. Kaufman has been appointed Assistant Professor of Contemporary American Jewish Studies. He received his Ph.D. in American Jewish History from Brandeis University, and has taught at Brown University, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, JTS, Hebrew College, and Baruch College, among other institutions.
Dr. Mark Kligman has been promoted to Associate Professor of Jewish Musicology. He has been an Instructor and Assistant Professor of Jewish Musicology since 1994.
Dr. Adriane Leveen has been appointed Assistant Professor of Bible. She received her Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible from the University of California at Berkeley and has lectured on Bible at the University of San Francisco, University of Santa Clara, and Stanford University.
Rabbi Ellen Nemhauser, ordained at HUC-JIR in 1993, has been appointed the Director of the HUC-JIR/CCAR Joint Commission on Sustaining Rabbinic Education.
Dr. Racelle R. Weiman has been appointed Director of the Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education at HUC-JIR/Cincinnati. Dr. Weiman received her Ph.D. in Interfaith Dialogue and her M.A. in Holocaust and Genocide Studies from Temple University. For the past 14 years, she was a lecturer at the University of Haifa, where she specialized in Interfaith Relations and Holocaust Studies.
Rabbi Andrea Weiss has been appointed Instructor in Bible. She was ordained at the New York School in 1993 and is working on her Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and the Ancient Near East at the University of Pennsylvania, where she is writing her dissertation on "Figurative Language in Biblical Prose Narrative: Metaphor in the Book of Samuel."
Dr. Yaffa Weisman has been appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor of Contemporary Jewish Studies. She has served the College-Institute since 1981, most recently as Judaica Librarian and Associate Librarian, and as a part-time faculty member. She will succeed Harvey P. Horowitz, effective February 1, 2001, as Librarian of the Frances-Henry Library, HUC-JIR/LA. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in Comparative Literature and a M.L.I.S from the University of California at Los Angeles.
Laurel S. Wolfson, formerly Senior Associate Librarian for Administrative Services, has been appointed Deputy Librarian of the Klau Library, HUC-JIR/Cincinnati.
Deb Xander has been appointed Registrar and Director of Financial Aid of the Cincinnati School.
Dr. Wendy Zierler has been appointed Assistant Professor of Feminist Studies and Modern Jewish Literature. She received her Ph.D. from Princeton University, where she wrote her dissertation on Jewish Women Writers and the Immigrant Experience in Israel and the USA.
Dr. Gary Zola, Executive Director of the Jacob Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives, has been promoted to Associate Professor of the American Jewish Experience.
