Rabbi Marc Rosenstein, Ph.D.
Director of the Israel Rabbinical Program, HUC-JIR/Jerusalem

Rabbi Dr. Marc Rosenstein was appointed Director of the Israel Rabbinic Program, as of August 1, 2009. Rabbi Rosenstein directs this program while continuing to direct the The Galilee Foundation for Value Education, the educational institution he currently heads.

Rabbi Naamah Kelman, Dean of HUC-JIR/Jerusalem, said, "Rabbi Rosenstein brings years of educational experience and rabbinical sensibilities to this task. His hands-on success as social entrepreneur and institution builder in the Galilee is of great benefit to our Israeli rabbinical students as they embark on their leadership paths. His deep commitment to a Jewish, Zionist and Democratic Israel will now permeate all our programs at the College-Institute. We are are privileged to have Rabbi Rosenstein's valuable educational and personal contribution to the College-Institute."

Rabbi Rosenstein graduated Harvard University in biochemistry in 1968, and was ordained at HUC-JIR New York in 1975. He is a graduate of the Mandel Jerusalem Fellows program, and earned his doctorate at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in Jewish History (1986). Rabbi Rosenstein was assistant to Rabbi Martin Rozenberg at the Community Synagogue in Port Washington, NY, served as principal of the Solomon Schechter Secondary School in Skokie, IL, and the Akiba Hebrew Academy in Merion, PA.

He made aliya to Moshav Shorashim in 1990 with his wife Tamara and their three children, and has been the director of The Galilee Foundation for Value Education since 1993. He has served on the board of the Leo Baeck Educational Center, Haifa, and is chair of the board of LINK Environment Foundation in Nazareth. Since 2000 he has contributed a weekly column, "Galilee Diary," to the URJ website (www.urj.org/educate/galilee).

Rabbi Rosenstein stated,"I believe that the sustainability of the Jewish state is dependent on developing a broadly shared vision of what that state should look like. I see my assignment as enabling HUC-JIR to play a major role in that process, both as a place for serious, thoughtful study and deliberation regarding the Reform vision for the state - and as an institution training leadership capable of disseminating and implementing that vision in Israeli society."
