The story of women in the rabbinate brings together German and American history. When Sally J. Priesand was ordained at HUC-JIR in Cincinnati in 1972, she became the first woman rabbi in North America. Yet the first woman rabbi in Jewish history was a German woman, Regina Jonas (1902–1944). The American Jewish Archives and the Leo Baeck Institute have joined forces to sponsor a rare and fascinating conversation on women rabbis, then and now, featuring two pioneering women: Rabbi Sally Priesand and Rabbi Sonja Pilz, who was ordained at the Abraham Geiger College in Germany in 2015.
