Planned Giving: The 1875 Society

Since its founding in 1875, the Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion has become one of the world’s distinguished centers for advanced Jewish studies and a beacon of hope for all who seek to promote liberal Judaism and interfaith understanding. It is the students and graduates of HUC-JIR that offer inspiration and innovation for 21st century Judaism around the world.

Throughout its history the College-Institute has benefited time and again from the foresight of friends/alumni who have established trusts or made testamentary gifts to support out work. Indeed, it was the offer of a trust in 1873 that spurred the creation of the Hebrew Union College. Through bequests and trusts, you have the opportunity to join those who over the years have enabled the College – Institute to:

  • Sustain our strength as a leadership institution in the field of Jewish studies
  • Launch new educational and cultural programs
  • Provide our students the financial and academic resources to develop transformative leadership for communities around the world
  • Strengthen our role in Israel as we join with progressive Jews there to encourage religious pluralism and Jewish vitality.

Through bequests and trusts you have the opportunity to establish a special memorial or tribute to someone you may wish to honor, or to permanently link your name to some particular aspect of the College – Institute’s mission.

Throughout our people’s history, no Jewish community has survived without a strong institution of higher Jewish learning at its core.

Our alumni have played a decisive role in shaping the course of the American Jewish experience, as founders of the United Way, the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and the Hillel Foundation; as Zionist leaders who helped to bring the modern State of Israel into existence; and as the first women to be ordained rabbis in America and Israel. The influence of our alumni of Jewish life in North America, Israel and around the world is immeasurable.

As a supporter of our school, you may have considered making a significant gift to the College-Institute but have held back because of possible future needs for yourself and your family. Our planned giving program allows you to provide for the future needs of HUC-JIR while meeting your own financial goals.

The 1875 Society was established to recognize individuals who have ensured the continued vitality of HUC-JIR through the establishment of legacy gifts. Members of our staff are available to speak with you about your gift and to answer questions about the process. Please contact Susan Kulick J.D., at 513-487-3227 or at plannedgiving@huc.edu.

Please demonstrate your commitment to the future and mission of the College – Institute by joining with generations of leaders who have acted to assure the Jewish future.
