The School of Jewish Communal Service of HUC-JIR was founded in 1968 to address the need for more highly trained and Jewishly committed professionals in Jewish life. Over the past 40 years, the SJCS has earned a distinguished reputation as a premier center for the education of Jewish professional leaders with an interdisciplinary approach featuring:
  • A carefully designed two-year course of study integrating Jewish knowledge, Jewish communal dynamics, nonprofit management, and leadership training,
  • Extensive supervised field internships utilizing the substantial resources of the Los Angeles area, the second largest Jewish community in the United States,
  • A unique partnership with the University of Southern California for the granting of dual Masters degrees,
  • A three-week intensive Israel Seminar exploring issues in contemporary Israeli society and networking with colleagues in the Israeli political, cultural, religious, technological, environmental, and social service sectors, and
  • An array of formal and informal learning opportunities in partnership with other HUC-JIR divisions, including the Rabbinical School and the Rhea Hirsch School of Education.
The SJCS offers a variety of degree options, responding to the breadth and complexity of the Jewish nonprofit arena including:
  • Certificate in Jewish Communal Service
  • Single Masters (MAJCS)
  • Joint Masters with the Rhea Hirsch School (MAJE)
  • Dual Masters degrees in association with nationally ranked graduate schools at the University of Southern California, including the Marshall School of Business (MBA), the Annenberg School of Communications (Masters of Communications Management), the School of Policy, Planning and Development (MPA), the School of Social Work (MSW), and the Roski School of Fine Arts (Masters of Public Arts Services).
The SJCS is committed to pluralism and diversity, with students drawn from the full spectrum of Jewish denominational, ethnic, national and cultural backgrounds. Graduates of the SJCS have served and continue to serve as distinguished professional leaders in an array of Jewish communal institutions and agencies throughout the world, including Federations, Hillels, Jewish Family Services, BJE's, JCC's, foundations, museums, synagogues, camps, day schools, the URJ, Hebrew Union College, AIPAC, JCRC's, the American Jewish Committee, ADL, JCPA, Jewish World Watch, Brandeis-Bardin Institute, United Jewish Communities, JNF, Birthright Israel, Beit Teshuvah, Jewish Free Loans, Jewish Big Brothers, and a variety of Israeli and international organizations.
