
Prizes

Friends of the College-Institute have, either by endowment or by
annual or occasional gifts and bequests, established a number of
prizes to be awarded to students. Many of these prizes are awarded
for essays written on selected topics. Announcement is made to students
annually as to the availability of funds for awards and the topics
selected for prize essay competitions. (This list is in formation.)
All essays for which prizes are awarded are deposited in the Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion libraries.
The Rabbinical School - All Campuses
The Rabbi Abraham J. Feldman Essay Prize in Reform Judaism,
established by a group of friends of Dr. Feldman in Hartford,
Connecticut, to be awarded biennially to a junior or senior.
The Rabbi Roland B. Gittelsohn Prize in social action
or in religious education established by Temple Israel of Boston,
Massachusetts, in honor of their rabbi. To be awarded to that student,
alternately in the Cincinnati and New York Schools, who has successfully
implemented the most effective congregational project in social
action or education.
The Richard C. Hertz Memorial Prize for student essays.
The Israel I. Mattuck Memorial Essay Prize in Jewish ethics.
The Jack and Audrey Skirball Prize, established by Mr.
and Mrs. Jack H. Skirball of Beverly Hills, California.
The Horace I. Wolf Essay Prize in social justice, established
by the Central Conference of American Rabbis, through its Commission
on Justice and Peace, in memory of Rabbi Horace J. Wolf.
The Women of Reform Judaism Centennial Prize to that student
whose academic and professional record indicates the greatest contribution
made toward the expansion and development of the role of women in
Judaism.
The Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Ziegler Essay Prize in sociology
of religion, established by Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Ziegler of Scranton,
Pennsylvania, in honor of Rabbi Milton Richman.
The Rabbinical School - Cincinnati
The Robert L. Adler Prize, established in memory of Robert
L. Adler, member of the Board of Governors, to be awarded to a rabbinic
student on the Cincinnati campus who best exemplifies Adler's values
through service to the community.
The Israel Bettan Memorial Prize, established by the Association
for a Progressive Reform Judaism, to be awarded to the senior student
who has been most creative and imaginative in pulpit presentation.
The Donald P. Black Prize for enhancing interfaith dialogue
and understanding, established by Mr. and Mrs. G. William Boyd of
Cincinnati, Ohio.
The B'nai Zion Gold Medal, awarded by the American Zionist
Fraternal Organization, New York, New York, to the rabbinic student
who has achieved the highest proficiency in Hebrew.
The GLOVARR Prize, to be awarded to the rabbinic student
serving a student congregation who has instituted the most creative
program or project in his/her congregation.
The Nelson and Helen Glueck Prize, established by an anonymous
donor.
The Ferdinand M. Isserman Prize in community relations,
established by Temple Israel of St. Louis, Missouri, in honor of
Rabbi Ferdinand M. Isserman's seventieth birthday.
The Cora Kahn Prize, to be awarded to a graduating student
for the best sermon delivery and oratory during the senior year.
The Kaufmann Kohler Memorial Prize in Bible, endowed by
the Women's Guild of Temple Beth El of New York, New York.
The Kaufmann Kohler Essay Prize in Jewish philosophy,
endowed by Jacob H. Schiff of New York, New York.
The Simon Lazarus Memorial Prize, established by the children
of Simon Lazarus, to be awarded to the student of the graduating
class with the highest academic standing.
The Rabbi Emil William Leipziger Essay Prize in social
science, established by Touro Synagogue of New Orleans, Louisiana,
in honor of the eightieth birthday of Rabbi Leipziger.
The Rabbi Stephen N. Levinson Memorial Prize, established
by Rabbi Levinson's family, to be awarded to the graduating senior
who has made the most significant contribution to the College-Institute.
The Dr. Frank Rosenthal Biennial Award, established by
the Sisterhood of Temple Anshe Sholom A Beth Torah of Glenwood,
Illinois, to be awarded to that rabbinic student who, in the judgment
of the faculty, has submitted the best paper on an aspect of the
Holocaust.
The Rabbi Frederick C. Schwartz Prize, to be awarded to
a rabbinical student or students who in the judgement of the faculty
has made the most significant contribution to furthering the goals
and objectives of the UAHC's camping system for youth and NFTY.
The Nathan Stern Prize, established by a bequest of Rabbi
Nathan Stern, to be awarded to the student who completes the program
leading to the degree of Master of Arts with the highest academic
standing.
The Nathan Stern Essay Prize in Hebraica, established
by a bequest of Rabbi Nathan Stem, to be awarded to a rabbinic student
in accordance with conditions as determined by the faculty.
The Selma Straus Prize, established and augmented by Robert
Lee Straus of Chicago, Illinois, for the best essay on universalism
in Judaism.
The Rabbi Morris H. Youngerman Memorial Prize, endowed
by Congregations B'nai Israel of Charleston, West Virginia, and
Shaari Shamayim of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in memory of Rabbi Morris
H. Youngerman, awarded to the student who preaches the best sermon
in chapel.

The Professor Stanley Gevirtz Award for excellence in
Bible, established by colleagues and friends of Dr. Gevirtz.
The Samson H. Levey Prize for the outstanding student
in rabbinic literature, established by Professor Samson H. Levey.
The Samson H. Levey Memorial Prize for the student showing
the greatest promise in the study of rabbinic literature and Talmud
and exemplifying in his/her person the values of Professor Samson
H. Levey, established by Dr. Alfred Gottschalk.
The Louis and Minnie Raphael Memorial Prize for outstanding
service to a small congregation, established by Zelda Raphael Kress

The Rabbi Martin and Betty Ryback Award in institutional
