Israel is at the heart of Jewish history, Jewish tradition, and Jewish life today. Ahavat Yisrael is a deeply held value in our community and brings deep meaning to the work you will do. The year at our Jerusalem campus is a time for you to immerse yourself in your studies and your HUC-JIR community in a holistic way. It is here, far from your everyday experience, where you will build relationships with your classmates who will become your colleagues for a lifetime. What looks like a requirement when you enroll becomes a gift once your journey as a student is underway.
Your learning in the Year-In-Israel program includes the study of Hebrew language, extensive reading in the Hebrew of the classical texts of Judaism, and the study of the history and contemporary realities of Israel. As you study with HUC-JIR’s first year rabbinical and cantorial students, your courses in liturgy and modern Judaism will introduce you to the thought and practice of the Reform Movement.
As an MARE student, you will participate in a year-long education course. The seminar-style course, Education and Values in Israel, introduces you to the big questions in education and Jewish education including: What is education? What is the relationship between society and education? What are the current and emerging trends in Jewish education in North America?
You will have the opportunity to look at the challenges of Israel education and develop your own personal vision for Jewish education.
