Course Offerings and Class Schedules

School and Programs The Jerusalem School serves as the academic center for a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. In addition to the Year-in-Israel Program, these include a rapidly expanding Israeli Rabbinic Program, the Beit Midrash / A Liberal Yeshivah Program of Jewish studies, and training programs for Israeli teachers and educators. It is also home to the URJ Eisendrath International Exchange (EIE) Program for high school students. Future plans include a Center for Educational Initiatives, as well as programs in Jewish Communal Service and Jewish Music. The Jerusalem School serves as the Center for the Progressive Movement in Israel and trains the rabbinical and educational leadership for the Reform congregations, schools, and agencies in Israel.

The five-acre Jerusalem campus, situated on King David Street near the center of Jerusalem, overlooks the ancient walled city. The original building facing King David Street was opened in 1963 and houses the William Murstein Synagogue and administrative offices as well as those of the URJ-Israel Office. The Forchheimer Ceremonial Courtyard was dedicated in July 1993.

The Rosaline and Myer Feinstein Building, adjacent to the Karpas Gardens, was dedicated in 1970 and houses the Jerusalem residence of the President of HUC-JIR. It also contains the offices of the Department for Educational Initiatives and provides facilities for the nursery school and the kindergarten of the Reform Movement in Israel.

The S. Zalman and Ayala Abramov Library, which was dedicated in March of 1988, has the capacity of holding over 100,000 volumes of Hebraica, Judaica, and Near Eastern Archaeology. Its special collections include the personal archaeology library of the late Professor Yigal Yadin, the Spinoza collection of Professor Fritz Bamberger, and thousands of books and pamphlets on the American Jewish experience including microfilms of materials from HUC-JIR's American Jewish Archives in Cincinnati. The Abramov Library houses the Danny Rechler Student Computer Center and the Zimmerman Family Special Collections Study Complex.

The Bernard Heller Torah Center has seven seminar rooms and four large classrooms surrounding the Gersten Courtyard. In addition, the complex houses faculty studies, the Rosen Faculty Conference Room, the Gottschalk Family Lounge and Activity Center, and the Gottschalk Lecture Hall. The Skirball Center for Biblical and Archaeological Research houses the Nelson Glueck School of Biblical Archaeology, including laboratories for pottery restoration and for the preparation of archaeological publications. Adjacent to the research center is the Skirball Museum featuring a permanent exhibit of archaeological artifacts discovered during HUC-JIR excavations from 1963 to the present. The sites represented in the Museum are Tel Dan, Gezer, and Aroer. One highlight is an exact replica of the "King of the House of David" and the "King of Israel" inscriptions from the 8th Century BCE, discovered at Tel Dan in 1994. The Museum houses the Horace and Grace Goldsmith Galleries, the Jay Kislak Galleries, and the Bergreen Conference Room.

The campus features the Herbert Arthur Posner Garden, the Tsevat Memorial Garden, and gardens contributed by Mr. and Mrs. Irving Karpas, Jr., Isadore E. Millstone, Marilyn and Abraham S. Braude, and Janet and Jacques Stone. The gates by artist Maty Grunberg were donated by Murray Goodman.

The Beit Shmuel Guest House and Cultural Center of the World Union for Progressive Judaism is situated on the east end of the campus, with its main entrance on Shama Street. Beit Shmuel has guest rooms, seminar rooms, a dining hall, and a coffee shop. The offices of the World Union and the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism are situated on the third floor.
