The Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education of Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion invites the public to a special screening and panel discussion
of the award-winning film “The Pianist” at the Mariemont Theater on
Sunday, January 19, 2003 at 3:30 pm. Panelists include Jeff Hirsh, Channel 12
WKRC reporter; Henry Meyer, world-renowned musician and Holocaust survivor of
Cincinnati; and Dr. Racelle Weiman, director of The Center for Holocaust and Humanity
Education. Tickets can be purchased at the Mariemont Theater box office.
The film, directed by Roman Polanski, will premiere in the Cincinnati area this
weekend. Actor Adrien Brody portrays Wladyslaw Szpilman, a Polish Jew, who is
an accomplished young composer and virtuoso pianist who escapes from the Warsaw
Ghetto and survives the Holocaust. “The Pianist” won the Golden Palm
award at the 2002 Cannes film festival and four awards from the National Society
of Film Critics, including best picture and best director.
Facilitated by Dr. Racelle Weiman, the discussion following the
screening will explore the complex issues and dilemmas raised in
the film. Henry Meyer, a member of the Auschwitz Orchestra, met
Wladyslaw Szpilman after WWII and will share his impressions of
the film and the similarities and differences with his own personal
experience. Jeff Hirsh, who recently returned from Poland where
he was filming a documentary on the Holocaust, will address the
life-changing experience of learning about the Holocaust ‘up-close’
through the eyes of those who went through it. For further information
