The HUC-JIR Kalsman Institute on Judaism and Health Announces Their Partnership
with The Academic Coalition For Jewish Bioethics with an Inaugural Conference
in Philadelphia - February 29 - March 1
The HUC-JIR Kalsman Institute jointly sponsors the "Models of Cooperation"
Conference for leaders in the Jewish healing field - December 14-16
Los Angeles - The HUC-JIR Kalsman Institute on Judaism and Health has formed
the Academic Coalition for Jewish Bioethics with other liberal seminaries and
the University of Pennsylvania for the purpose of fostering a new discourse
in bioethics. The coalition, which has been meeting for nearly a year, will
be inaugurating the partnership with a major conference in Philadelphia on Sunday,
February 29th through Monday, March 1st, 2004. The theme of the conference will
be "Can Quality of Life Be a Factor in Jewish Bioethics Discourse?"
Dr. Jerome Groopman, who holds the Dina and Raphael Recanati Chair of Medicine
at the Harvard Medical School and is Chief of Experimental Medicine at the Beth
Israel Deaconess Medical Center will deliver the keynote address at the conference.
Dr. David Ellenson, President of HUC-JIR, and David Golinken, head of Neve Schechter
in Jerusalem, along with a number of luminaries will address the moral and ethical
issues surrounding Jewish Bioethics.

"Models of Cooperation: Reflections on the Jewish Healing Movement,"
is a conference jointly sponsored by the HUC-JIR Kalsman Institute on Judaism
and Health, the Bay Area Healing Center, and the UCSF School of Medicine. It
will be held from December 14th through December 16th, 2003, in Burlingame,
CA. The conference will gather a multidisciplinary group of leaders in the Jewish
healing field to look creatively at the common history and to suggest ways of
collaborating that can move the work forward. The conference will also celebrate
the Bat Mitzvah (13 years) of the Jewish healing movement and honor is principal
founders Rabbis Rachel Cowan, Amy Eilberg, and Nancy Flam, as well as Ellen
Hermanson (of blessed memory).
