GREGORY N. BROWN APPOINTED
VICE PRESIDENT-CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER AT
HEBREW UNION COLLEGE-JEWISH INSTITUTE OF RELIGION
Rabbi David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion, has announced the appointment of Gregory
N. Brown as HUC-JIR's Vice President-Chief Administrative Officer.
Starting December 1, 2003, Brown will promote HUC-JIR's institutional
vision and ensure that its four centers of learning in Cincinnati,
Jerusalem, Los Angeles, and New York function efficiently and effectively.
As part of the President's senior administrative team, he will have
a wide range of executive responsibilities for establishing and
implementing procedures, integrating and coordinating the administration
of the four campuses, placing emphasis on strengthening the communications
system, and formulating and leading an institutional strategic planning
process.
In announcing this appointment, Rabbi David Ellenson stated,"Greg
Brown's expertise at a world-class academic institution, University
of California at Berkeley, as well as his positions with the City
of New Haven and Yale University, have made him a wonderful addition
to the HUC-JIR family. He has worked with faculty and staff on a
wide range of issues, including ethics and accountability, the redesign
of business processes, and various programs of salary, benefits,
classification, and personnel systems. Greg brings enthusiasm for
the mission of HUC-JIR, and a deep understanding of how organizational
effectiveness can be enhanced."
Brown brings extensive management experience in higher education
and government to HUC-JIR from his current work as Assistant Vice
Chancellor - Finance and Controller at the University of California,
Berkeley, where he is responsible for financial accounting and reporting
for the school's $1.5 billion in annual expenditures. HUC-JIR will
also benefit from his earlier experiences which include work as
Controller of the City of New Haven, CT, where he directed the financial
operation of New Haven's $300 million general fund budget and supervised
a staff of over 90 employees; as Finance Director, Town of Guilford,
CT; and as Assistant Comptroller, Financial Reporting and Analysis
and as Financial Analyst, Financial Operations and Planning, Yale
University, New Haven, CT, where he coordinated Yale's university
audit, and prepared and monitored the operating budgets for several
school and departments at Yale.
Brown received a M.P.A., with a specialization in accounting and
finance, from the University of New Haven, and a B.A. from Wesleyan
University. He belongs to the National Association of College and
University Business Officers and the Institute of Management Accountants.
