Holocaust Studies for Educators: A 21st Century Challenge

*Enrollment is limited. Upon acceptance into this course, $98 is required to cover costs of materials.

Holocaust Studies for Educators: A 21st Century Challenge is a multidisciplinary teacher training program at the graduate-level developed for teachers, education professionals, administrators and graduate students in the Tri-state area.

The core course is offered by The Center for Holocaust & Humanity Education of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion on its Cincinnati campus, and it is recognized and approved for graduate level credit hours or in-service professional training. Since 1996, teaching the Holocaust to educators is the focus of the Center. Course graduates continue to be involved through our vast resources:

  • Membership in the Holocaust Studies for Educators Alumni Association
  • Invitations to "master classes", lectures, conferences and international trips
  • Pedagogic Resource Center (multi-media) and Speakers' Bureau
  • Portable traveling exhibits
  • Holocaust Awareness Weeks public programs and Yom HaShoah Memorial Services

    Holocaust Studies for Educators: A 21st Century Challenge is taught by the world-renowned educator, Dr. Racelle Weiman, Director of the Center. It is organized into the following teaching modules:

  • The Teacher of the Holocaust: Role Model
  • The Nature of Prejudice
  • Universal Implications of a Unique Historical Event
  • Minority Status and Powerlessness
  • The Unthinkable and Unforgivable: Pushing Beyond the Limits of Evil
  • Bystander Behavior and Choice Making
  • Courage, Resistance and Rescue
  • Literature, Art and Culture
  • Preserving Equality and Diversity
  • Lessons Learned, Lessons Yet to Learn: Facing Evil
  • Today's Educational Challenges -Teaching Ideas and Initiatives

    After September 11, teachers seek answers to their students' fears and questions. Holocaust Studies for Educators: A 21st Century Challenge addresses with integrity the issues of inhumanity and confrontation with evil. Offering creative solutions and promoting dialogue, it leads the quest for moral and social intelligence for the modern world. Engaging multiple levels of sensory knowledge, the course includes:

  • Full-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
  • Presentations from Holocaust survivors, liberators, historians and artists
  • Museum, audio-visual and archival resources
  • Teacher Idea exchange, internet global classroom
  • Holocaust curriculum, tools, materials and programming
