Rabbi Sheldon Zimmerman, HUC-JIR President, has announced the appointment of Joyce Rosenzweig to the new position of Artist-in-Residence. Ms. Rosenzweig is an accomplished pianist, teacher, and mentor who trains cantors and Jewish musicians in the Reform tradition. She teaches courses in all aspects of Jewish sacred music, and Yiddish, Israeli, and Ladino song at HUC-JIR's School of Sacred Music in New York.Ms. Rosenzweig has performed as soloist, chamber player, and collaborative artist with singers and instrumentalists throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Israel. A native of Houston, she has been a featured soloist with the New Orleans Philharmonic and Texas Festival Orchestra and has appeared in recital at the National Holocaust Memorial Museum and Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Dame Myra Hess Concert Series in Chicago, the Bronfman Centre in Montreal, and all the major concert halls in New York City. She has collaborated with members of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, and has performed at the Cleveland Orchestra's Blossom Music Festival, the Banff Centre for the Arts (Canada), Round Top Music Festival (Texas), the International Festival of Jewish Music (Amsterdam), and the Franz Shubert Institute (Vienna), where she was awarded the first prize in Lieder accompaniment.
During the summer of 1998, Ms. Rosenzweig was featured accompanist for the series of gala concerts held at Carnegie Hall, Ellis Island, and Temple Emanuel of the City of New York in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Cantor's Assembly, and was the pianist for the American Conference of Cantors' Convention in Jerusalem. For the 50th Anniversary of HUC-JIR's School of Sacred Music, she will perform and host concerts at the academic conference, Music, Spirit, & Scholarship: The Legacy of Eduard Birnbaum, to take place November 22-23 at the New York School. Ms. Rosenzweig is also Music Director of Congregation Beth Simchat Torah in Manhattan.
