College-Institute Holds Faculty Retreat

For the first time in twenty-five years, the HUC-JIR faculty attended a joint retreat from June 14-16. The retreat was planned by a faculty committee chaired by Professor Samuel Joseph. Sixty faculty members gathered at the Hickory Ridge Conference Center in Chicago, where some met for the first time. In their discussions, faculty focused on the place of Hebrew language education in the curriculum, the skills graduates would need as Judaism enters the next century, and the College-Institute's strategic planning process.

Dr. Norman Cohen reported that having all the faculty gathered together "felt phenomenal. It reflected how far the school had moved forward in unity and the relationship of the campuses. The commitment of our faculty to maximizing our efforts came through during the retreat." The generosity of Stanley and Ilene Gold made this extraordinary event possible. The College-Institute is committed to planning another retreat in two years. A full report on the retreat will appear in the winter issue of the Chronicle magazine.
