Rabbi Michael Chernick, Rabbi Lawrence Kushner and Danny Siegel will present "Pursuing Justice: Three Journeys to Tzedakah; The Activist, the Mystical and the Halakhic." After the presentation, speakers and audience members participate in small group discussions.
The Halakhic: Rabbi Michael Chernick, Deutsch Professor of Jewish Jurisprudence and Social Justice and Professor of Rabbinics at HUC-JIR, is the editor of Essential Papers on the Talmud.
The Mystical: Rabbi Lawrence Kushner, author and lecturer on Jewish Mysticism, Kabbalah and Hasidism, is a former rabbi of Congregation Beth El in Sudbury, Massachusetts and Rabbi-in-Residence at HUC-JIR.
The Activist: Danny Siegel, author, lecturer and poet, is the founder of the Ziv Tzedakah Fund, a non-profit Mitzvah organization, and one of three recipients of the 1995 Covenant Award for Exceptional Jewish Educators.
The Dr. Jules Backman Memorial Lecture is made possible through the generosity of the late Dr. Jules Backman, former Chairman of the Board of Governors of HUC-JIR. A nationally prominent authority on prices, labor and antitrust issues, Dr. Backman taught at NYU for more than 40 years and was Research Professor Emeritus of Economics at the time of his death.

"Poetry as Prayer" • Dr. Marcia Falk • Monday, April 23, 7 pm
In this lecture and dramatic reading at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion,
Dr. Marcia Falk will discuss her poetic process. Dr. Falk will present selections from her book, The Book of Blessings: New Jewish Prayers for Daily Life, the Sabbath, and the New Moon Festival, which revision Jewish liturgy from a gender inclusive perspective.
Dr. Falk is the Rabbi Sally J. Priesand Visiting Professor of Jewish Women's Studies at HUC-JIR/Cincinnati and Visiting Scholar at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California.
