Rabbi Shirley Idelson

Dean, New York School
Rabbi Shirley Idelson has served as Dean of the New York School of HUC-JIR since 2007. Following her ordination from HUC-JIR/NY in 1991, she served at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY as the Director of Religious Activities and Chaplaincy Services. In 1998, she moved to Minneapolis and where she became the campus rabbi at Carleton College in Northfield, MN and Associate for Jewish Life at Macalester College in St. Paul; she also directed Arts and Religion in the Twin Cities and worked at Minnesota Public Radio as a producer and newscaster. Rabbi Idelson returned to HUC-JIR in 2002 as Associate Dean. She is a graduate of Dartmouth College; has a Master's degree in Journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism; and, is a candidate in the Ph.D. History Program at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where she is a Chancellor's Fellow. She is writing her dissertation on the history of the Jewish Institute of Religion.
